School’s competition choir, Jubilate 2012 had another year of
"superior” ratings. The school year started off with the Florida
Music Educator’s All-State Choir auditions. Three students
qualified and participated in the three day event held in Tampa.
Kerry Lynch and Reva Satchell performed with the Women’s Choir
while Emily Vitale performed in the Mixed Choir.Jubilate’s first
major achievement in 2012 as a group came under the direction of
James Paul, Choir Director, on February 18th when they
earned Superiors at the District Choral MPA held at Lincoln Park
Academy in Fort Piece. All six choirs (Freshman Women,
Intermediate Women, Advanced Women, Men, Concert Choir and Jubilate
2012) received superior marks from the judges allowing them to move
on to the State competition.Next up, over their
spring break, 70 students traveled to New York City to participate
in the national Heritage Festival. Once again, the amazingly
talented group of students outshined the competition. The choir
competed in three divisions. The Men’s choir, Women’s Choir and
mixed choir, Jubilate 2012, were all awarded 1st Gold
honors with the Women’s choir taking home "Most Outstanding Choir”
of the competition. In addition, all three choirs received the
Adjudicator’s Award for scoring a 95 or higher on a 100 point
scale. This is the third time Jensen Beach High School’s choir has
been honored with the Adjudicator’s Award.Shortly after
returning from New York City, the students were afforded the
opportunity to compete at District Solo and Ensemble MPA’s. Eleven
students represented Jensen Beach High School in both individual
and duet categories. Colleen Broome, Kerry Lynch, Kaitlynn
Orlandi, Kaelyn Radebach, Reva Satchell, Nicole Tucker and Emily
Vitale received superior marks for individual performances while
Delanie Fetzner and Samantha Spofford scored superiors for their
duet. Rebecca Aquilante and Marissa Hansbrough were awarded marks
of excellence for their individual performances.Jubilate’s most
recent success came at the State Choral MPA held at Palm Beach
Atlantic University on May 2nd. James Paul, accompanied
by Janice Little, led all six choirs, Freshman Women, Intermediate
Women, Advanced Women, Men, Concert Choir and Jubilate 2012, to
Superior awards for the third time this year.James Paul is a
graduate of Martin County High School and a former member of Martin
County High School OPUS (Outstanding People United to Sing) where
he performed under choir director, Ron Corbin. Degreed in music
education, Paul graduated from Stetson University and has been the
Choir Director for eight years at Jensen Beach. The choir started
with only 21 students and has grown substantially to the 130
members today. While under his direction, Jubilate has achieved
quite a few honors. The choir’s first national competition was in
Atlanta, Georgia where they placed first among small choirs. In
2007 they placed second in San Francisco and first place while in
Washington, D.C. in 2008. The choir ventured into New York City in
2009 and soared to new heights. Each division took home
1st Gold awards and earned the Sweepstakes award for the
highest average score of the competition. Jubilate continued to
surpass the competition in 2010 while performing in Chicago. All
three divisions placed 1st Gold, received the
Adjudicator’s award, Most Outstanding Choir and the Sweepstakes
award for the first time in choir history. They also received a
"Gold” rating for superior performance earning them an invitation
to perform at Carnegie Hall in 2011 or 2012. While in Chicago, the
students were afforded a "once in a lifetime” opportunity, they
performed the National Anthem at a Chicago White Sox baseball
game. The 2011 season brought continued success as they maintained
superior awards at both the district and state levels. The choir
competed nationally in San Diego with the Men’s choir and Jubilate
2011 receiving 1st Gold honors while the Women’s choir
placed 2nd Gold. All three choirs again received the Adjudicator’s
Award. Jubilate 2011 and Oklahoma’s Norman North High School, "two
of the elite level high school choirs in the whole country”, tied
for Most Outstanding Choir. Jubilate 2012 is
wrapping up the school year with its final concert on Friday, May
18th at 7 p.m. This concert is free to the public and
will be held in the Performing Arts Center located at 2875 NW
Goldenrod Road in Jensen Beach. If you would like more information,

Publix Super Markets delivered more than three tons of food to
House of Hope in April, thanks to the grocer’s Food for Sharing
program.
The program enabled Publix shoppers to buy food that would be
donated to a local hunger-fighting organization. Publix stores in
Martin County designated House of Hope as the
beneficiary.
Publix tallied shoppers’ donations and delivered palettes towering
with such items as canned vegetables, stew, tuna and peanut
butter.
The two deliveries in April totaled 6,074 pounds of food. The
second came just when the stock of vegetables was getting
drastically low on the House of Hope shelves.
House of Hope is a Martin County-based nonprofit agency that
provides food, clothing, case management and financial assistance
to local residents in need. In 2011, the agency provided local
residents with 179 tons of food – the equivalent of about 280,000
meals.
House of Hope stocks its pantries in Stuart, Indiantown, Hobe Sound
and Jensen Beach thanks to local food drives and donations as well
as purchasing food from the Treasure Coast Food
Bank.

to United for Families’ annual education and outreach campaign left
without tissue in hand.United for Families’ Fourth Annual Breakfast to Stop the Tears
began with a firsthand account of a young woman’s first days in
foster care. A little sad at first, Zuleima Iraheta’s
heart-wrenching account of being removed from home as a child
quickly turned into a tale of triumph as the now 21-year old
journalism student illustrated the importance that United for
Families, its staff and its critical Road to Success program had on
her life."It’s a devastating experience to be taken away from your family
as a child but even more so when you’ve reached adulthood and come
to the realization that you are on your own,” Zuleima said in a
speech that moved most in the room to tears. "That’s when the Road
to Success program came into my life."I was afraid of the world as a child and in my teen years I
didn’t believe that I’d ever be somebody. I want foster children to
know their future can be bright and that the world is theirs!
They’ve been robbed of their childhood but I want them to have
faith and hope that this is only the silent chapter of their
life.”The complimentary breakfast was United for Families’ call to
action and kickoff of its annual Stop the Tears Campaign to raise
local awareness for the issues of child abuse. Toward the end of
the event, guests were asked to join the organization’s
Superhighway to Excellence Society.Five guests joined the society this year, bringing the exclusive
membership to 27 and gaining the organization an additional $15,000
over the duration of the membership. To date, the membership has
brought in approximately $53,000 in pledges and donations.A sustaining donor is someone who agrees to support the
organization at a certain level for multiple years, said Christina
Kaiser, United for Families Community Outreach Director."We now have 27 members,” Kaiser said. "Each of those members
agrees to contribute every year for three years – so as we add new
layers of donors each year, we add to both our total annual
contributions and to the overall sustainability of the
program.”The approach is similar to the more traditional annual campaign,
which asks donors to give during a specified time – usually several
months."We are still a relatively new organization with a growing pool
of donors and limited volunteers,” Kaiser said. "It made more sense
to focus our efforts on a smaller scale and on donors who were
already connected to United for Families through our targeted
outreach efforts.”The event was simple and straightforward.Chief Executive Officer Christine Demetriades reminded guests of
the organization’s mission and vision, and two young adults – both
learning independent-living skills through the agency’s Road to
Success program, testified about the impact United for Families has
had in their lives.Rose Bailey, the adoptive mother of eight who has provided
foster care for more than 100 children in St. Lucie County,
delivered a light-hearted speech with a poignant message: children
may grow up and become adults, but they still need someone to come
home to.Finally, Pat McCoy, chairwoman of the United for Families’ Board
of Directors and a foster and adoptive mother from Okeechobee
County, gave an impassioned plea for support.A week earlier, United for Families staff celebrated a private
kickoff of the campaign with what has become a traditional
blue-ribbon tying ceremony outside the organization’s Port St.
Lucie Headquarters. This was the first year the symbolic blue ribbon event was
limited to United for Families staff."This event served two purposes: 1) to remind our staff how
valued they are for the work they do for every known abused and
neglected child, and, 2), to repeat our oath to our mission and
vision,” Demetriades said. "The blue ribbon represents the many
children we serve.”For information about United for Families, please visit www.unitedforfamilies.org.Zuleima Iraheta,

The Gilbert’s Bar House of RefugeBuilt in 1876, Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge is located
on the southern end of Hutchinson Island and sits atop the
Anastasia rock formation, one of the most prominent geologic
outcroppings along the entire Eastern
seaboard. Gilbert’s Bar
House of Refuge was one of ten houses commissioned by the U.S.
Treasury Department to serve as havens for shipwrecked sailors and
travelers along the barren east coast of Florida from Miami to
Daytona. It is the only House of Refuge
that has survived the test of time. With the formation of the Coast
Guard in 1915, Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge became Station #207,
and served as a Coast Guard Station until after WWII when it was
decommissioned. In 1953, Martin County bought the
land the House of Refuge sits on for a total of $168; two years
later, Soroptomist International of Martin County formed the
Historical Society of Martin County and opened it as a museum in
1956. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places
and celebrated its 135th anniversary in March 2011.The House provides a look at
turn-of-the-century living along the Florida coast. The lower
level displays Indian artifacts from Hutchinson Island’s earliest
inhabitants, the history of the house, and life saving equipment.
The property is available for rent. Open Monday thru Saturday from
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more

House of Hope is seeking volunteers to help sort the tons of food
delivered in Martin County.
All area residents can help by placing a bag of nonperishable food
items by their mailbox for their letter carrier to pick up on May
12. Recommended items include canned meats, soup, fruit,
vegetables, pasta, peanut butter, beans, tomato-based products,
cereal and rice. Do not include items that have expired, require
refrigeration or are in glass containers.
Dozens of volunteers are needed to help sort and box the incoming
food. Sorting will take place at the Martin County Fairgrounds this
year, and volunteer shifts are as follows:May 12: 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.May 14: 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.To volunteer, contact Kelly McIntyre at House of Hope, at (772)
286-4673 or kelly@hohmartin.org.
Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest single-day food drive and
is organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers. House
of Hope is the primary recipient in Martin County, typically
receiving about 40 tons of food.
The Letter Carriers’ food drive is an essential part of stocking
House of Hope food pantries, and it is especially needed during the
summer months, when children are not receiving school lunches and
many workers have their hours cut back because of seasonal
employment.
Throughout all of last year, House of Hope provided Martin County
residents with nearly 179 tons of food – the equivalent of about
280,000 meals. House of Hope’s services also include providing
clothing, financial assistance and case management to guide people
toward greater economic stability.
Information about House of Hope is available online at www.hohmartin.org.
Information about the food drive nationwide is at www.helpstampouthunger.com.
