Palm City Celebrates Community Centenial

If your family tree has roots in Palm City, the Palm City Chamber of Commerce wants to hear from you. As the community marks its 100th anniversary, the non-profit organization is celebrating the occasion in several ways, including a visual history, and needs photos and documents to help produce it.

"We are creating a PowerPoint presentation to share at public events like club meetings, and will also host historical tours of the area,” said Carolyn Davi, the chamber's executive director.

In addition, vignettes drawn from works such as Martin County, Our Heritage by Carolyn Pomeroy Ziemba, are being featured on the Chamber's website and in its regular messaging to its members.

An informal committee has been organized to oversee the project, and it includes representatives of two local families with century-long lineage: Johnny Leighton, whose great-great uncle came here in 1914 from Scotland to farm and grove; and Mabel Witham, whose husband's great grandmother was one of the first landholders in the area. In addition to Leighton and Witham, the committee includes Davi, former county commissioner Mike DiTerlizzi and Diane Grassick.

The committee's goal is to debut the PowerPoint presentation at a special meeting at the Cummings Library in mid-February, and begin the historical tours in late February.

To be considered for use in the PowerPoint presentation, photos and documents should be delivered to Davi at the chamber office by February 3rd. All items will be protected and returned to their owners following production.
